What are we on about?

Hello everyone!

I’ve decided to create this blog as a small step towards rectifying the general opinion and impression that Literature is an intensely difficult subject which can neither be understood nor enjoyed. When I was at school, Literature was the only subject deemed impossible to acquire a passing grade in and hated with a burning passion. This fact saddens me a lot for I feel that the written word is the best way to express one’s self and much can be gleaned about a person from how they write.

Honestly, there’s nothing complicated about it because it is all about opinion. If you like something, express your appreciation, if you don’t then voice your dislike. That’s as simple as it gets. No limitations, no exceptions; actually it’s the only thing which one CANNOT get wrong, as if your answer differs from the rest, then it is just a difference in opinions with the general public that you have. No one can fault you on having a diverse approach, only catch is that you have to explain that approach properly and make a solid case in your favor, which the examiner cannot disagree with even if they choose not to agree with it.

That is what most of my posts will be about: how to go about expressing then explaining your opinion. Feel free to drop a comment at any time, or ask up if you have any particular piece of work that you need analyzed or reviewed. With life being as it is, I can not promise that it would go up in time, but I would definitely try to accommodate your requests as best as I can.

I appreciate any feedback, especially if you want to share your own take on a particular piece of work. Also, for people who don’t know who’s behind the blog, I’m a 20 something cognitive neuroscience student based in the UK. Calling me ‘sir’ is most definitely not a stipulation.

Enjoy your visit and if Exams are around the corner, get up and have some tea before continuing.

Hareem ur Rehman.

    Hi,

Firstly thank you for your great effort in uploading these analyses , they have been very helpful in preparing for my Eng. Lit. IGCSE Exam. I was just wondering if you have or know of any resources for the Drama and Prose section, specifically A View from the Bridge or Of Mice and Men, or any resources relating to the English Language A Edexcel IGCSE, especially the section B texts.

Again thank you so much and i hope I don’t come round as being too demanding 😛

    Regards,
    Shahid

Your analyses are really good and I really hope you will be able to achieve your dreams. I am doing AS now in English Literature, and I want to be a writer too. But tell me, wouldn’t you like to start something original rather than commentary. Commentary and criticism improves writing style, but i think your style is developed enough for you to try something. If you wanna be a writer, you should start right now. Because nowadays, writers who start writing after completing their education do not really live to see their fame. So, I am just suggesting as a fellow dreamer that you start immediately. I believe you can do it. And i noticed your insights into poetry are particularly good. So, you can do something on that field, if you wish. I am sorry, if I sounded a bit Big-broish!! 🙂 I am from Bangladesh by the way.

        Hi! 🙂
First of all thank you for the compliment. Being praised for the work that one loves is the best kind of reward and it means a lot to me.
I’ve thought about what you are saying. Thing is I do write, but only fan fiction and that too I don’t advertise at all as I don’t think its that good. Writing poetry I have tried my hand at but again I am not really very confident about any of my work: I feel I have lots to learn and very far to go.
You’re doing AS from which board? And what are the books that you have chosen? It’s great to know that there is at least one more person out there who’s studying the same subject. 😛

Just curious but are you Hareem Salman? From Beacon Light Academy? Feel free to say no if you’re someone else or if you’re a secret spy trying to keep your identity safe. I ask because I am a literature student too and she was my senior.. Just curious…

Hey, I just wanted to say that your blog has been ever so helpful with my IGCSE English Lit revision, and your detailed essay’s and explanations are wonderful! Not only have I managed to cut down precious time surfing for all the analysis I need, but I have also found the ‘how to tackles poetry questions’ extremely helpful!! 🙂 not to mention the snow falling creates a really peaceful effect so that’s a bonus! 😀

So ThankYou So Much and wish you All the best with your future studies Insha’Allah!

I hope you keep updating you blog, because you’ve really helped me so much!
You have a real talent, don’t let your gift go to waste 🙂

hi, your analyses of the poems from the anthology are amazing :), I would really appreciate it if you could analyse the poem “once upon a time” by Gabriel Okara since it isn’t well known but studying it is compulsory as part of edexcel igcse literature. Best of luck in the future; I wish you the best of luck in the future with your deep odyssey in literature 😀

Thank you for commenting and I’m glad this helped. I most certainly intend to get on the other poems from the syllabus. I know they are compulsory, the only excuse I have for neglecting them and this blog is that I was trying my hand at original fiction and that had been taking a lot of my time and all my creativity. I intend to get back on track soon though, so check back in a month and you’ll find the completed analysis online.

Third try. Congratulations on this site, from one English Major to another..l although I graduated about 50 years ago, it has stood me well both as a teacher and a lawyer.

Your site is the first I have seen that uses the same theme as Trudel’s Truth- a blog from the past containing the letters my mother wrote as a refugee from Germany in 1934 and following. That fits with the poems by Auden and Owen I was seeking when I came across your site.

You can visit my blog at http://lgrossman.com/trudel

Hello. I am a grade 9 student and we have 7 poems to tackle for exams in this term. I am extremely thankful to you for this ‘life-saving’ blog! I have found 4 of the seven poems here (May God bless you for it!) however I need the analysis of 3 more (I know its too much to ask of you ( I get thoroughly confused with literature as its the first time I am facing it!!) but I request you to post the analysis of
    1. Once upon a time
    2. Half past two
    3. If
